The thing about taking four years to plan a kitchen is that I've fallen out of "like" with some elements I once thought essential. When this project was just a gleam in my iPad, I thought my island would surely be topped by three mid-century globe pendants of some sort. But as we get closer to demo day (more on that below), I find myself unable to settle on a pendant style. And now I think I know why — I don't want them anymore. Meet my new lighting love...

I saw these in Elle Decór over a kitchen table and I love the simplicity of them in natural brass. I can imagine them over my island, casting a soft glow that lights cooking tasks but doesn't detract from my planned focal point and splurge — the statuary marble backsplash.
There's a lot of experimentation going on in "The Gram" and in Houzz discussions regarding pendant lighting over islands. I'm seeing a lot of rebellion from the "rule of 3s." Some homeowners are featuring two big fixtures over an island rather than three smaller ones. Others are going smaller.

Some are even leaving off island pendants altogether and relying on small recessed lamps.

I'm definitely doing some recessed cans for ambiance, but I will also need some good task lighting over the island, which will be located far from the windows in a shadowy part of the room.
This fixture called the Spot On by Belgian architect Hans Verstuyft is I think, well... spot on.

The fixtures are available with a trimmable stem, so I can make them as short or long as I like. I'm leaning toward short.
The sleekness really appeals to me, and it will allow the marble backsplash to be the focal point of the kitchen.
In other news, the co-op's building manager signed off on our plan this week, and demo day is set for October 22. Let's get this party started!
