Before work this morning I met with our contractor Aleks to hand over a set of keys, and we went over the kitchen plans and the schedule of things that will take place this week. This project has for so long existed only in my head, it's exciting to know that while I'm at work all day doing my job, his crew will be here making things happen.
When I got home after work, everything was just as Aleks had said it would be. His crew had laid plastic sheeting and hard board throughout the entire house to protect the hardwood floors. They covered my wall of books in the living room with heavy-duty plastic sheeting and partitioned off the dining area, which Ross and I will be using as a temporary kitchen space.
There was a plastic zip door separating the “job site” from our temporary kitchen and a second one separating the temporary kitchen from the habitable part of the house (ie, master bedroom, second bedroom, and bathroom).
As I'd requested, they had set up the old refrigerator, a few base cabinets, and some countertop to create a temporary kitchen for us. I was able to set up a hot plate, electric kettle, microwave, etc., as well as the few dishes we’ll be using. I stowed the dry food goods we had put aside — things we'll be eating for the next weeks.
The job site had been bagged and swept clean — a sign of a good contractor in my book.
The only thing I had to worry about is our cat, Sasha. Adverse in equal proportions to strangers, noise, and change in general, she didn't venture out of the bedroom all day while work was going on. I coaxed her out to the temporary kitchen with the lure of Fancy Feast Ocean Whitefish— her favorite. But she was quick to jump back through the zip door when she'd finished eating. I laughed to see her leap through the plastic opening so tentatively, as if it were a ring of fire.
Unfortunately, I think this will be her M.O. throughout the renovation. I say "unfortunately," because her litter box is in the “cat closet” right off the temporary kitchen, and I'm very concerned that she won't want to use it. To play it safe, I have set up a disposable litter box in the spare room. You can't have too many litter boxes in times like these.
